The Little Birdies Collection
I have just completed my favourite little collection of beanies and slouchies yet. They are gorgeously soft and cosy. Hand-knitted in beautiful custom hand-dyed 70% Merino / 30% Alpaca super chunky New Zealand made wool.

I created the patterns myself and thoroughly enjoyed combining the different colours to come up with four unique items. With the wool being hand-dyed by Lynn at Lochanside Alpacas, there is little chance of the colours and flecks being replicated.
The Alpaca is an amazing animal. It originally came from the Andes Mountains of South America. It is related to the camel and looks like a smaller version of the Llama. Like the camel, it spits when it is angry.
The Incas used their wool for clothing their royalty. The wool is hypoallergenic which means it won't cause itching or sneezing. It is also resistant to fire and water. The beanies made from Alpaca are great for the rainy weather and for staying dry in the snow.
The two breeds of Alpaca are Suri and Huacaya. The Suri has a long, silky dredlocks. The Huacaya has a thick, woolly, crinkled fleece. There are no Alpacas in the wild.
Alpaca in New Zealand
An amazing thing I learnt from Lynn is that the Alpaca carry their young for almost a year. They live in family groups and look out for each other and communicate by humming.
I also discovered that they love a backscratch!
Back to the Little Birdies Collection. Here they are:
Four patterns and 5 items. I just had to make a smaller version of the Little Birdies Slouchy.
The Bluebird Cabled Beanie is a favourite. I love the faded denim colour of it.
The Little Birdies Blue Rimmed Slouchy is a large slouchy for a nice relaxed look.
The double moss stitch of the Little Birdies Beanie gives a great texture and is topped off with the faded denim colour.
And why are they called The Little Birdies Collection?
I was inspired by a cute photo of the Bluebirds. I thought that if nature can combine those colours so well that we could have a go at replicating what nature has so superbly combined. Lynn worked her magic with the dyepot and we were really pleased with how they all came out.
How awesome is nature? I just love it!
